Stories from RLC
Mental Health Week Activities at RLC
Last week (May 1- May 5) the Arts Council, under the inspired leadership of Emma Clendenan, organized a creative campaign to bring awareness and mindfulness practice to our student body around the many mental health issues that affect our society. This year we used an acronym Mr. Daigle had designed to help him with work/life balance struggles brought on by new fatherhood.
Each day of the week we focused on one of the letters and had activities and presentations to engage everyone around the idea of taking it SLOW!

Girls’ Rugby
Last Wednesday, May 3, eight intrepid girls made RLC history, playing their debut 7’s rugby tournament. This feat was especially exciting given that this year is the first time girls’ 7’s rugby has been a CISAA sport and the first time that RLC has fielded a girls’ rugby team of any sort.
All eight girls who played on Wednesday were brand new to the game, having just started learning to play rugby this spring. Although they were nervous, they faced the day with enthusiasm and positivity and fared remarkably well. In the first game, our girls held their own against a more experienced team from Greenwood College School. Although GCS won the match, RLC gained valuable playing experience and confidence, holding them to a 7-point differential after tries by Esther and Taylor. In the second game, the RLC girls were able to put away four tries (another by Esther and three more by Aurora) against Hillfield Strathallan College “B,” and came away with a win! The team’s excitement was palpable and their tenacity and adaptability in a new situation were admirable. Congratulations on a great debut girls, and best wishes for another fantastic experience at the Lakefield College School tournament this week!
Boys’ Rugby
The boys’ rugby team also saw action last Wednesday, hosting a home tournament on the front field. Though the day itself was sunny and beautiful, the field was a muddy mess thanks to days of rain leading up to the tournament. This meant that the boys were in for a tough day of rugby! Although our boys were not able to come away with a win, many newer players were able to gain experience and the group as a whole was able to learn about what areas of their game to focus on to improve over the rest of the season. Jacob stepped up and made some big hits in his first rugby tournament ever, and returning players Will, Mohamed, Ewan, Griffin, and Ray could be counted on for their strong tackling game. This was the boys’ last exhibition tournament of the season, and they plan to use it as a learning experience to capitalize on their upcoming league tournaments, which begin this week at Cherry Beach. Let’s be our best when it counts, gentlemen!
