Stories from RLC

The Outtrip

Something inside me gets lost
and left behind, every time
our silent canoes cross through
the shimmering golden stillness
of crestfallen tinsel
off an evergreen vanishing point,
this kind of forever is contagious.

The students compare everything
to what they left behind, seeing
underwater grass as noodles,
igneous quartz as rounded piles of tofu,
zig-zagging water striders as deadly
drone strikes, what is it about nature
that moves away from us as we get closer.

The irregular lessons of weather patterns,
tall swaying pines ache to pronounce
sudden frightful winds, disarming
their saw-toothed silhouette reflections, we pile
into zippered tents and listen closer
to slapping tarps and hissing embers, united
by reminders of our brand of insignificance.

As I navigate this irregular group through
Killarney’s culture of discovery, my mind
drifts in and out, like the loon
dips and disappears into her vast
container, a continuous current carries me
somewhere I never planned to be, where
memories map without borders.

The longer we stray in the bush, the further
the rules of discovery are pushed,
the farther the father in me is rushed
into reality, parent and teacher
and guide, and isn’t there a little irony
when everything about an out trip
is really a trip inside.

Fatigue lifts the ban on self,
shifts focus to golden birch tea,
numb detailed moments of unknotting rope,
trippy teenage chatter, Group of Seven territory,
painted turtles stare from a log, the safe distance
sighting of a black bear cub skips the heart
forward to the next tall story.

The bus ride home is an unnatural
default setting, the once strange few
have become a crew of eager
earphone buds, duty bound and battered
bruised, a little more memory muscle,
a lot more energy used, carrying Canada high
above their swollen heads in spirit canoes.

Leadership

“Leaders inspire action by making themselves, and those around them, better.”

The Student Prefects spent Labour Day at RLC, participating in team building activities and creating a mission statement for the year.  They used two of the new learning spaces – The Hub and The Knot- in their sessions.

Every student at Rosseau Lake College is a part of a leadership committee.  There are eight committees that each have a purpose within the school community (Student Council, Athletic Council, Residential, Environmental, Arts, House Cup, Community Outreach and School Store). On Thursday, September 15th the prefects hosted a leadership committee fair where every student had the opportunity to visit individual committee booths and sign up to be on a committee.

Committee meetings are held every Friday from 11:30 – noon. These meetings are run by the prefects and their advisors using proper meeting protocols with agendas and minutes.  Students, through participation, will learn valuable skills through their involvement in the committees.  The first committee meetings for the school year occurred on Friday.
