Weather Transportation Policy

During the winter months, the weather in Parry Sound/Muskoka is unpredictable and we can soon expect the unexpected in terms of inclement weather.   No doubt the inclement weather, when it comes will adversely affect the schedule at RLC.

Transportation Cancellation

Student safety is of the utmost importance and we can expect plenty of weather-related cancellations during the upcoming winter months.
When the weather is poor and road conditions are deemed, or are anticipated to be unsafe, the local school board will make a call to cancel transportation.  If this occurs Rosseau Lake College will follow and cancel all RLC transportation to and from the school.  On mornings when this occurs the school will be notified between 6 –  6:30 am.

Academic Schedule on Weather Days

On days when transportation is cancelled day students are welcome to come to school, but must find their own form of transportation to do so.  Classes will continue, but the schedule will be delayed by one hour.  Boarding students will have a sleep in and the day will start with morning assembly at 9:30 am.
Students who are not able to attend classes are encouraged to come to school (if safe to do so), or join a class using Google hangout/Skype.  All teachers use technology – specifically Google Classroom and will post class activities, individual tasks, and homework for all students.  Teachers will use professional judgement and will postpone activities or assessments that require the physical presence of students.
In terms of homework or assignment submission on days when transportation has been cancelled, students can expect to submit this work electronically, unless the teacher has made a professional decision to postpone or move the due date.  Students are always encouraged to communicate with their teachers for specific instruction, but they should not assume a due date has been cancelled.

Transportation Cancellation Notification

The cancellation of RLC student transportation will be communicated via social media –  RLC Facebook or Twitter.  This task will be completed as soon as notification occurs between 6 – 7 am.

Grade 10 History

Our grade 10 History class went to Bracebridge to incorporate technology and history together,  and with that, we came out with History GO! We managed to take our class and we each had to have a partner, one of us had to have the game Pokemon Go downloaded, and with every Pokestop, we had to figure out the historical significance behind it. Walking down the main street of Bracebridge in the snow was incredible, the views were so beautiful! We had to walk down the main street to catch Pokemon which connected with Nature is our Learning Lab.

We managed to interact with nature and our environment while learning about history, all while playing Pokemon Go! The Culture of Discovery was incorporated because we physically had to get up and walk around to find these Pokestops and figure out the significance of them, by doing research or reading the plaques and monuments. We are using our PLP’s to personalize our answers related to this hunt!  Overall, it was a great experience, and a great time using the new double-period afternoon schedule. Great job, Grade 10’s!

Grade Nine Geography – Green Home Project

The Grade 9 class is looking into how to lessen their ecological footprint and to make changes in their lives and homes to protect the future of our environment.

They are using programs like Minecraft or SIMS to create a 3D house with a 360 view, as well as floor plans to demonstrate room by room how they are making changes.  The students will discuss what old technologies exist in their homes now and how they would initiate a green initiative.

Skills: Design Thinking, Technology (Information Management), Self-Management, Thinking and Learning are all put into play with this project.

Nordic Ski Team – Thank you, Mr. Beaulne!

Nordic Ski Team Trail Maintenance

The Nordic Ski Team would like to give a big thank you to Mr. Len Beaulne who built two bridges for the team to cover the culverts on either side of McCarthy Road.  These bridges will allow the groomer to easily cross between our trails, and it will also allow the students to cross on level ground versus climbing a snow bank. Safety first.  Thanks for improving our program and keeping us safe Mr. Beaulne.
