This event is mounted annually in support of the Ruth Dare Health Clinic. The clinic, like the school, is an expression of the community that supports it.
Begun in 2003, for many, it provides an essential service. “We’re not an urban centre,” says Ellen Walker, the administrative lead, “so there are some services that simply aren’t available locally. But what we can do is provide a connection to those services, and that’s one of the wonderful parts of this model. That we are so connected with the hospital, with the community, and other organizations—mental health and addictions, in-patient and out-patient programs, community-parent medicine—so when a patient comes in, there’s no wrong door, we’re able to connect them to all these other options.”
The current facility was completed in 2008 and includes screening rooms, spaces for physiotherapy, as well as apartments where nurse practitioners and medical staff can overnight, as needed. Walker describes fundraising as essential to the continuation of the program. “For one, rural and remote medicine is more expensive than urban medicine. Even things like internet services cost more here. What fundraising in the community allows us to do is focus on the costs for running the station,” as well as to expand the services and programs offered there.
Perhaps like so many things in Rosseau, it takes a village, and RLC is proud to support the work of the nursing station once again this year.
