My professional career has been centered around small schools for a reason. I believe, heart and soul, in the importance of developing personal relationships and having a wide range of experiences that “round” you out as an individual. I have seen the “efficiency” of bigger settings and the range of activities they appear to offer but I have experienced the “effectiveness” of small schools that have a true sense of community interdependence. Suffice it to say, Rosseau Lake College is just that kind of school.
Faculty work here by choice. The expectations related to the care and education of students are very high and the work hours are long but every teacher recognizes the significant role he/she plays in the life of EVERY student in the school. This is a community of educators who see the profession as a calling, not a job. Students quickly realize that their efforts and conduct are not only noticed, but that teachers take their performance to heart. Our goal is to be the role models and mentors worthy of student respect and we know that such respect will be earned when students understand we are there to assist them in becoming “the best of self.”
Similarly, students attend here by choice. They value the attention they receive and they thrive in a community of high expectations and a broad range of experiences. At a time when the influence of peers becomes very significant, being surrounded by peers who value a good education and a safe learning environment makes it easier to maintain focus and to make good decisions.
True, we have an incredibly beautiful setting, with fresh air and a range of wonderful outdoor activities. Many graduates will reflect on the outdoor experiences they had and recognize them as cornerstones in the development of their confidence and environmental appreciation. Still, the true measure of the school is the impact the personal relationships and work habits developed have on students in whatever setting life takes them.
Rosseau Lake College is a small school with a clear mission. It is a place where each student matters and we speak in terms of personal growth and development not institutional efficiency. There is nowhere to hide at RLC and we think that is a good thing.
I hope that the information you find on this website is helpful in considering Rosseau Lake College for your son or daughter and invite you to call if you have further questions. Alternatively, we invite you to visit. That will make all the difference when you see these words turned into the daily life of the students.
