Killarney Park, September 20-24, 2007
Located in the heart of the La Cloche Mountain range, Killarney's ancient quartzite hills, wind swept landscape and clear lakes provide a beautiful setting for a canoe trip. Hiking to the summit of Silver Peak reveals why native people considered this a land of spirits. On our 4-night trip, we will travel through a circuit of lakes joined by portages. Completing each portage is generously rewarded by a pristine lake and an opportunity to cool off with a swim! This program for the grade 9 students builds on the skills and activities learned in Grades 7 and 8. The students will fulfill 20 hours of community service hours by cleaning and restoring campsites after a busy summer season. Academically, activities are designed to address Ministry of Education course expectations but in ways that make good use of the unique natural and human environment. For instance, learning how to use GPS units to navigate in the park satisfies a component of the geography course expectation.
